LED Research Group

CALCE research will help the LED manufacturer to update the qualification process of LEDs. The results will be how to develop a qualification test set with data to monitor and the methods to analyze the data during or after the qualification tests so that information on LED reliability and lifetime and fitness for use can be gathered in a shorter time. As added benefits, LED manufacturer can provide guideline information to the LED users on how to estimate RUL (Remaining Useful Lifetime). LED manufacturer may also be able to build in PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) methods into LEDs (or help design control systems for LED lightings) based on the results of this project and the qualification on initial design and prototypes.

The final goal of this research will be :

  1. the tests that should be run for qualification
  2. methods to analyze monitored data
  3. determination of acceptance and rejection criteria
  4. assessment of times to failure in typical conditions
  5. models for the LED reliability prediction based on PoF and data-driven approaches, and
  6. Accelerated life test descriptions (stress conditions, duration, data collection guidelines and the sample size) including that can be used to verify LED reliability predictions.
