Moon-Hwan Chang received the B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sogang University, Seoul, South Korea and the M.S. degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering from the University of California at Davis in 2004. He was awarded the National Science Foundation (NSF) fellowship. He was also supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), NIH during his M.S. studies.


He is a senior research engineer in Backlight Technology Group, LCD Research Center, LCD Business, Samsung electronics Co., Ltd. since 2005. He is a Six Sigma Green Belt holder. He has more than 10 published international patents with regard to LED backlighting systems in the United States.


He is an expert on developing advanced LED backlight units for LED laptops, LED monitors, and LED TVs with respect to optical design and reliability design. He contributed developments of a large number of commercial Samsung LED TVs (up to 80") and Samsung LED monitors (up to 30") in the world market.


He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received outstanding student paper award in IMAPS Mid-Atlantic Microelectronics Conference, Atlantic City, NJ in 2011. He is a student member of IESNA (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America). His current research interests in the University of Maryland are in the field of LED reliability, LED failure mechanisms, diagnostics, and prognostics of LED based electronic systems.
